The Parks and Recreation Department strives to be an active department that engages the community, promotes wellness, and offers recreational activities for everyone.

The park should, as far as possible, complement the town. Openness is the one thing you cannot get in buildings . . . the beauty of the park should be the other. It should be the beauty of the fields, the meadow, the prairie, of the green pastures, and the still waters. What we want to gain is tranquility and rest to the mind. - Frederick Law Olmsted, “Public Parks and the Enlargement of Towns” February 25, 1870.

Parks Maintained

The Richmond Parks and Recreation Department currently maintains six parks including Lake Reba, Camp Catalpa, Irvine McDowell, Million, Dillingham, and the Betty Miller Park. The Parks Department is also in charge of the Paradise Cove Aquatic Center, Adventure Falls Miniature Golf and Batting Cage Complex, and the Irvinton House Museum. In 2017, the Parks Department worked with the Richmond Industrial Development Corporation to open a new walking trail on the South Side of Richmond off of Duncannon Lane. This 0.6-mile paved trail is now open to the public and is perfect for residents who live in the Golden Leaf area or work in the Industrial Park.

In addition to the many facilities that we maintain, the Parks Department operates the Richmond Teen Center, which is housed in the Betty Miller Building, located at 325 North Estill Avenue The Teen Center works with the Madison County Extension Office and 4H to provide Mentoring Mondays which have been sponsored by a 4H grant since 2015. We also are in charge of the Madison County Special Olympics (MCSO). Currently, the MCSO offers Basketball, Track and Field, Bowling, Softball, Flag Football, and Golf. There are also social activities for people with intellectual disabilities which include a Valentine's Day Dance, Spring Fling, Christmas Dance, Arts and Crafts activities, and other special gatherings.
